happy halloween 2016 aboard clearwater

one of the most bizarre and beautiful and freeing sails i’ve had on the good sloop clearwater was this past halloween. after various disasters the night before, and my own good sloop being hauled out of the water earlier that day at hideaway marina, this community was still as exuberant and welcoming as ever.

the idea was to costume as the lost boys.  no, not from the 80s vampire movie, as i thought. the crew watched many versions of peter pan to prepare for their roles, but deemed each one after the other too racist to be viewable. still, they pulled it off in their own loving style. and i was thrilled to join them as a lost boy on their last passenger sail of the season.

and an old portrait of the artist… maybe you’ll also get a recipe for that orange cardamom cake with rosewater citrus glaze sometime soon.  but, then again, when she baked this cake she said the people she served it to “didn’t deserve it,” so maybe you won’t.

a series of curiosities.

i’ll start with the obvious then.  this is a parallel and series project (intersecting/interdimensional) between time, space, media, and, again, dimension.

these portraits/process photos were taken on Kodak Vericolor film from the early 1960s, found perfectly (read, per photographers: messily) entombed in a darkroom of that era in peekskill, new york.  being 120 format, i used my beloved, but perhaps retarded, 1954 Yashica Twin Lens Reflex. the film was rated at iso 160, and i lacking an electronic light meter, used my beloved but perhaps retarded brain for exposure calculation on an overcast autumn day.

okay: film expired, camera likely expired, brain questionable.

so those are the specifics. more vaguely, kat took to the shore of the hudson at kingston point to forage for a holiday wreath. i tagged along with camera in hand and we created this series, this photo montage, and this wreath which adorns the front door of our house.

this being film, and not 35mm film, it is apparently now quite a challenge to find a service to fit the bill readily!  i was shocked that even in new york city, at locations where it was once easy to get film processed in just one hour, now one can expect to wait a week or more for film processing, and of course at a great premium! WHAT.  and one can of course expect substandard and dubious processing in the printing department, as if one’s negatives weren’t violated enough. gross. of course the further away and more impersonal the source, the lesser the satisfaction with the product.

luckily in Kingston, Artcraft on Ulster Avenue still offers in-house film processing, even though their prices and the quality of their printing services (these prints were provided by Artcraft and several are not centered in the frame from what was amply available in the negative) are as good as a 1990s CVS… which might net you $5 and you’d still feel ripped off. thank you Artcraft, for offering a needed service in speedy processing, but the prints are the same sort of quality you’d expect from amateurs at a cornerstore.

so, here is the adventure . . . !

a very open boat

every winter, the clearwater hosts a series of “open boats” to bring the community together and to raise awareness and funds for the sloop and the organization. the first of this winter was last week at the barn on the rondout creek in kingston, new york. the usual colorful crowd, community potluck smorgasbord, and exuberant sharing of music were all there, as were some unique sights. the sloop herself is currently aboard a barge docked on the rondout with several of her midships planks removed. you can poke your head in between the frames and view the sloop from a brand new perspective.

the next open boat is january 16th, 2016 at the barn at the hudson river maritime museum. it’ll be weird like this, i promise! you can check out some photos from a 2013 open boat here!

clearwater gala

while i was living in new orleans i had been covering many a social event with my photography business.  i photographed galas and luncheons for New Orleans CityBusiness, art openings and weddings for private clients, and the vibrant celebration that is everyday life in new orleans. it’s always a pleasure to work in an atmosphere where people are there for the express purpose of celebrating and enjoying themselves.

when i heard that the clearwater was hosting a fundraising gala, i jumped at the opportunity to photograph the event!  what a strange idea: a grassroots and nitty gritty organization such as the clearwater to be putting on a gala at the gorgeous garrison, opposite of west point in the hudson highlands.

it was a truly singular event which raised about $110,000 for the organization and the restoration of the sloop. the night was a great cause supported by a great community, and a contrasting face to my ouvre of life on the clearwater.

for very brief moments during the day, the sun finds its way to a certain height in the sky to peek through clearwater’s main cabin stained glass windows and spill colorful light across bulkheads, crewmembers’ faces, and, today, a special guest in the main cabinthe propane stove.

one of my photos of the clearwater on the barge made its way into the sunday edition of the poughkeepsie journal this week in an article by john ferro.

it’s also apparently four years since i had my first cover photo at New Orleans CityBusiness published.  it was a very fun assignment. i got to shadow bug killers, rat trappers, identical twin waitresses, and the man who maintains the lights on the crescent city connection. it was an interesting week!
